Starting from Drive Eraser 6.12.0 there is a support to boot and erase Apple T2 devices. For Drive Eraser 6.12.0 it is required to manually update the grub boot files in order to support booting these devices.
Note! The grub files will be updated and included within the ISO image on Drive Eraser 6.13.0 release and below process is no longer required and the booting will be supported by the default boot files.
Follow below steps in order to update the grub files on Drive Eraser 6.12.0:
- Download below the updated grub file and rename it "grub.efi":
Download Drive Eraser Grub Files - Prepare a USB stick with the latest Blancco USB Creator tool, use exclusively a Blancco Drive Eraser 6.12.0 ISO image.
- Navigate in the USB stick to the directory /efi/boot/, then drop the download grub.efi file there (replace any existing grub.efi file if needed).
- You might have to prepare your Apple machine to boot from an external device. This is doable via the macOS Utilities (a macOS password might be needed to proceed), where you need to:
- Change Secure Boot to “No Security”.
- Change External Boot to “Allow booting from external media”.
- Connect the USB stick to the machine as well as an external keyboard (needed to control BDE).
- Boot the machine, select the Drive Eraser 6.12.0 image, then select the "Customized startup" booting option (do not add any additional booting parameter).
- The BDE UI should show up and the internal drive should be ready for erasure.
Note 1: When testing a MacBookPro16,1 (from late 2019), the booting succeeds approximately in 2 out of 3 attempts, the rest of the time the machine will reboot itself and you will have to repeat the step 6.
Note 2: During our tests, there were some fringe cases where the machine was fully booted (fans working) but the UI was not shown at all (black screen). If your machine shows a similar behavor consistently, it can be erased via the automatic erasure process or be remotely controlled from Blancco Management Console.
